Why Are PDFs Password-Protected in the First Place?

Banks, government offices, CAs, lawyers, and HR departments commonly send PDF documents with password protection. Your salary slip arrives from the payroll system with your employee ID as the password. Your credit card statement comes with your date of birth. Your ITR acknowledgment from the income tax portal has a password set to your PAN number plus date of birth.

This is standard practice — it adds a thin layer of privacy protection in case the email is intercepted or forwarded accidentally. The password isn't meant to keep the document from you; it's meant to prevent casual snooping by someone who opens the wrong email.

The problem is that working with these files becomes annoying fast. You can't merge them with other PDFs, print them easily, or upload them to portals (some portals reject password-protected files). Removing the password once you have authenticated ownership is completely reasonable.

What weFixPDF's Unlock Tool Does

If you know the current password, you can remove it. That's the key distinction: weFixPDF does not crack or bypass passwords — it removes a known password. You enter the password, the tool decrypts the PDF, and saves an unlocked version with no password required to open.

The unlocked PDF is otherwise identical to the original. Fonts, images, text, form fields, annotations — nothing changes except the encryption layer.

Common Passwords Used by Indian Institutions

If you've received a locked PDF and forgotten the password, these are the conventions used by most Indian senders:

Banks: Date of birth in DDMMYYYY format. Some banks use the first 4 letters of your name + last 4 digits of your account number.

ITR acknowledgment (income tax portal): PAN in lowercase + date of birth in DDMMYYYY. Example: abcde1234f01011990.

EPFO UAN slip: Date of birth in DDMMYYYY format.

Insurance companies: Date of birth in DDMMYYYY, or policy number.

Payslips: Employee code, or the last 4 digits of your Aadhaar, depending on the company's payroll system.

If none of these work, check the email body — the sending institution almost always mentions the password format somewhere in the message.

What You Can't Do

weFixPDF cannot unlock a PDF if you don't know the password. This isn't a limitation of the tool — it's a feature of AES encryption. A 128-bit or 256-bit encrypted PDF cannot be cracked in any reasonable timeframe without the password.

If you genuinely don't know the password and the PDF is your own document, contact the sender and ask for the password or a fresh unprotected copy.

After Unlocking: What Can You Do?

Once unlocked, your PDF can be:

The unlocked file is saved only in your browser's temporary memory and is never stored on weFixPDF's servers.

When You Legally Own the PDF but Can't Open It

The most common situation is this: someone sent you a password-protected PDF years ago, you saved it, and now you can't remember the password. Or you created a protected PDF yourself and the password is lost. Or you received an official document with restrictions that prevent you from printing or copying text.

In all these cases — where you are the legitimate owner or authorized recipient — removing or bypassing the protection is legal and reasonable.

What you should not do: use a PDF unlocker on documents you don't own, didn't receive legitimately, or that belong to someone else. That's a different situation entirely.

Why PDFs Get Locked in the First Place

Some PDFs arrive locked because the sender set a password on their end. Others have restrictions (no printing, no copying) added by default in certain document management systems. Government PDFs in India — like Form 16 PDFs generated by TRACES or salary slip PDFs from some payroll systems — often arrive with restrictions by default that prevent you from printing them.

This can be genuinely frustrating when you need a physical copy for a tax filing or a bank submission. Unlocking the permissions (not the open password) lets you print and copy as needed.

What Stays Intact After Unlocking

Unlocking removes only the password protection layer. The document content — text, images, layout, annotations, bookmarks — is completely unchanged. What you get is the same document, accessible without the password.

For PDFs with both an open password and permissions restrictions, you need the open password first. If you don't have it, unlocking is not possible with a standard tool.
